Mexico an Illustrated History
Published in Hardcover by Penguin Putnam~trade ()
Author: Michael Burke
Average review score:

Small, but first-rate.
This is a small (5"x7") and short (183 pp) book--an historical overview of Mexico that is extraordinarily well done by a Prof. of History at Villanova University. Burke has done a first-rate job packing that much into this book, which is a must particularly for those for whom Mexico is new, and a most helpful review for those who have some knowledge of it. Pre-Columbian and Colonial Mexico, Independence and Reform,The Revolution and the Recent Past are all presented in a succinct, knowledgeable and sensitive way.

Mexico and the Sexenio Curse: Presidential Successions and Economic Crises in Modern Mexico (CSIS Significant Issues Series)
Published in Paperback by Center for Strategic and International Studies (01 November, 1999)
Authors: Jonathan Heath and Sidney Weintraub
Average review score:

Mexico Between Hitler and Roosevelt: Mexican Foreign Relations in the Age of Lazaro Cardenas, 1934-1940
Published in Hardcover by University of New Mexico Press (March, 1998)
Author: Friedrich Engelbert Schuler

El Tata revisited
I'm not that fond of Lázaro Cárdenas or his legacy, but this book showed me a different side of him that made me realize he was a far more complex, shrewd, practical and wiser man than I initially thought him to be.

However slanted the author's appraisal of his subject may seem to me (I'm sorry but Mr. Cárdenas was more of a cacique than a democrat, if he ever was one), the book is full of facts, many of them unknown to most Mexicans, and makes an interesting reading. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Mexico Blue-Ribbon Fly Fishing Guide
Published in Paperback by Frank Amato Publications, Inc. (01 January, 1999)
Authors: Ken Hanley and John Shewey
Average review score:

Excellent for do-it-yourself
Excellent book for experienced fly fisherman who are looking to explore mostly unfished waters, at least with a flyrod. I have fished some of the areas that Ken mentions. Agree with his evaluation as well as recommendations for lodging. Presents an alternative to some of the pricey lodges.

Mexico City

BEAUTIFUL PHOTOGRAPHY & INTERESTING TEXT
The author and the photographer Harald Sund have captured late 70's Mexico City in all its splendour. This metropolis is the oldest continually occupied city in the Americas. Founded in the 14th century by the Aztecs, it grew to be the capital of a great empire that amazed the Spanish conquistadors who, in 1519, became the first Europeans to witness its splendour. After a savage war, the Spaniards destroyed the glittering city of the Aztecs and on its ruins built the colonial capital that has developed into the Mexico City of today. Even more than in 1979 when this book was published, Mexico City is a sophisticated, affluent and cosmopolitan city that nonetheless faces daunting problems of overpopulation and overstretched resources. In his lively and perceptive account, the author explores the contradictions and paradoxes, as well as the excitements and delights, of this exhilarating city, whose complex character springs from its inextricably mingled Indian and Spanish inheritance. The text includes separate articles on e.g. the eagle symbol and important historical events. Sund's photographs not only provide a vivid record of the city' imposing landmarks and incomparable archaeological reassures, but give intimate glimpses of the vivacity of its people in the late 1970's. A map of the country and two maps of the city are included, as well as black and white historical photographs, aerial and nocturnal views, reproductions of illustrated Aztecs manuscripts, paintings of scenes from the city and colourful modern murals. The book concludes with a bibliography and index.

The Real Stuff
If you are into Mexican cooking, you really need to own this book. This is not the usual taco or enchilada, rice and beans "Gringo" stuff. Very individualized and authentic recipes from deep in the heart of Mexico and beautiful illustrations make this a Mexican cookbook like none other I've seen. The food is outstanding and would be a real treat for your guests. This is gourmet caliber food but easy to prepare. You will need a Mexican market for some of the ingredients but it will be well worth the trip.

Mexico en Una Nuez y Otras Nueces
Published in Paperback by Fondo De Cultura Economica (01 January, 1996)
Author: Alfonso Reyes
Average review score:

An introduction to a key thinker
Reyes is one of the forefathers of Latin American thought and literature. This anthology, for Spanish speaking readers, is the right introduction to the complexities of his work. The first essay, Vision de Anahuac, focuses on a nostalgic reconstruction of the mighty Aztec empire from a cosmopolite position. The second, Mexico en una nuez, analyses the specificity of Mexican history. The small volume also includes two short stories: La cena, a brilliant short story that was used by Carlos Fuentes as a model for Aura and La silueta del indio Jesús. The volume is highly recommendable for students of mexican literature, as well as readers interested in Latin America outside the Boom. Reyes was also a nominee for the Nobel Prize and a friend of Borges.

Mexico Madness : Manifesto for a Disenchanted Generation
Published in Paperback by Aliform Publishing (10 February, 2001)
Authors: Eduardo Garcia Aguilar, Eduardo Garcia Aguilar, and Jay Miskowiec
Average review score:

An examination of what it means to be Mexican
Mexico Madness: Manifesto For A Disenchanted Generation by Eduardo Garcia Aguilar (a journalist with Agence France-Presse) is a scathing, sober, and meticulous examination of what it means to be Mexican, and what it means to be Latin American. Discussing such hot button political and economic issues as the gathering strength of the Zapatistas, the controversy surrounding NAFTA, and the emotional state of a land and its people, Mexican Madness is a powerful, insightful, candid account, presenting very a series of real problems in a no-holds-barred style of unforgettable writing by a journalist well versed in his craft and knowledgeable about his subject.
